Since August 2005, volunteer workers from America, Australia and Europe have been doing their very best to support the ECSO through their work teaching one or several subjects to the different classes in the school.

The school is aware of the immense value of these volunteer workers. The newly arrived teachers, particularly those from abroad, fascinate and motivate the children. Mr Boateng, owner of the school and host to the volunteer workers, is convinced that the children can be helped simply by encouraging them to go to school and offering them a high-quality education.

The school wishes to receive more volunteer workers and warmly encourages those who are interested in spending a period of time in Esaase.

Details of Volunteer Work in the School

The volunteer workers teach according to their wishes and personal ability. While it is not a prerequisite to have teaching experience, knowledge of the education sector can prove a useful asset.

Volunteer workers teach the following subjects: English, Information Technology, French, Mathematics, Art and Physical Education. With the exception of French classes, all lessons are taught in English.

The volunteers also help to pick up students in the morning with the school bus (the volunteers are not responsible for driving the bus!) and assist Mr Boateng’s wife and host to the volunteer workers, Lucy, in preparing the evening meals and carrying out a range of household chores. Volunteers are also responsible for cleaning their own room and bathroom.

In January 2006 a new building was constructed to house the volunteer workers. Each volunteer now has his/her own room and private bathroom. The building is equipped with mosquito nets on all windows, fans, a living room/office and a small kitchen.

During school holidays and at weekends the volunteers can visit Ghana’s numerous tourist attractions (national parks, seaside forts, the royal palace, museums etc.). Those who wish to can ask to be accompanied by a member of the Boateng family. In such cases volunteers are responsible for covering the expenses of their guide.
